Workshops
Do you love rhythm? Have you ever wanted to understand or learn
how to play drums or rhythms from other cultures? John's series of workshops
offers a rare opportunity to gain proficiency in worldwide hand drum
techniques. These sessions explore rhythm, pulse, and improvisational exercises,
and work towards developing confidence, dexterity and independence in
traditional rhythms from the Arabic nations, West and Sub-Saharan Africa, the
Caribbean, North and South India and the traditional Western world. Participants
learn to apply exciting poly-rhythmic patterns to a variety of instruments
including frame drums, Egyptian tambourines and dumbeks, congas, djembes, drum
kit, tabla, and tuned percussion. A workshop for the total rhythmic novice, as
well as the trained percussionist, stress will be placed on the transformation
of technique into joyful rhythmic collaboration in a safe and non-competitive
atmosphere.
Workshops may be designed to fit any schedule; half day, full day, weekend or extended residencies. Private organizations, colleges,
community groups, corporations and learning centers of all kinds are welcome to inquire.
Private Instruction
John also teaches individuals and small groups at his private studio in Northern Connecticut. Surrounded by his collection of hundreds of
percussion instruments, you can learn on either his or your drums, and progress at your own pace.
